The Mott Marathon Challenge comes "Full Circle" on Sunday, June 8 at the Central Valley Academy track. The 19th running will sponsor the race's original partners from 2007–the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life. The event will also continue its "Be My Best Me" focus, stressing health and wellness. The day kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with the Jarvis Mile for eighth graders followed by the marathon at 10 a.m.

History

The marathon had a humble and somewhat unintentional beginning. One day in class, Ilion senior Eric Lachacz poked fun at teacher Jim Mott's 2007 Boston Marathon finish. Eric boasted that anyone could beat that time–even without training. Jim poked back. He challenged his student to prove it on the flattest course in the world, the school track. Eric accepted. Jim raised the stakes, suggesting his student use the event to raise money for a worthy cause. When the day arrived, Eric ran alone cheered on by Jim and a small group of Eric's friends. Eric later insisted they only turned out for the fundraiser, purchasing water balloons for one dollar each to hurl at him as he passed. The modest proceeds were sent to the Relay for Life.

Today

Fast forward 18 years. The marathon is now a rite of passage for CVA seniors. To be clear, this is not a race, because few of the students are actual runners. Instead, the 105 laps are a personal test. This is about finishing, no matter how long it takes. Each marathon begins with as many as 50 seniors smiling at the starting line. The smiles steadily fade with each mile. Muscle cramps, blisters, fatigue, and mental exhaustion take their toll. A few drop out, but most endure. All walk at some point, trying to regain their focus, rest their bodies, and fight the overwhelming desire to quit. Still, they push on for a chance to break a toilet paper finish tape. There are no prizes, just a simple race medallion and the satisfaction of having overcome.

Like the number of participants, the event has grown. Donations and pledges now raise thousands of dollars for a given cause each year. Race day, more than a few friends turn out. The infield is covered with canopies and folding chairs filled with families and friends who help count the laps and cheer on their marathoners. The event has become a district- and community-wide day, celebrating the students and the sport of running and raising awareness for mental and holistic wellness.

More than students

In recent years, the marathon began inviting CVA, Ilion, and Mohawk alumni, faculty, and staff, and community members to participate. Teams of runners (never more than two at a time on the track) can combine their laps toward the 105 needed to complete the 26.2 mile distance.  Organizers are planning a special walk for Saturday, June 7. Stay posted for more information.
