CVCSD Foundation grant to help underwrite Jarvis Challenger efforts

Twenty-eight Gregory B. Jarvis Middle School students will spend a day at the Challenger Learning Center in Rochester thanks to a generous $1,200-grant from the Central Valley Central School District Foundation. While at the center, the students will take part in a Mission to Mars simulation. Not only will it be fun, but the exercise will develop their Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) process skills.
The Jarvis students will be chosen from those who participate in a school-wide essay contest. The contest is just one of the many activities the school is holding to mark the 40th anniversary of the space shuttle Challenger disaster. Among the seven people who died that day was Mohawk graduate and the school's namesake, Gregory Jarvis.
“At every grade level and in every department, students are completing different activities related to Gregory B. Jarvis and space exploration,” said Jarvis principal, Jessica Bowman.
“By highlighting the fact that Jarvis came from this community and achieved great things, we aim to encourage students to recognize their own potential and strive to attain their goals. This initiative allows us to achieve both our educational aims and the vital task of honoring and remembering a valued member of our community.”
The CVCSD Foundation approved the application for funding to help underwrite the learning center experience.
“The Foundation is proud to support this hands-on experience honoring Gregory B. Jarvis,” said Molly Bonnell, Foundation Vice President. “His legacy holds a special place in Mohawk, reminding our students that extraordinary achievements can begin right here in their own community.”
The Foundation is sponsoring a daily number raffle for February for $5/ticket. The winning number is based on that night’s winning lottery numbers. To purchase a ticket or for more information about the Foundation, contact JoAnn Duga at 315-894-3116 or joanndugaCVAFoundation@yahoo.com.
